8 BEST GOPRO HUNTING CAMERA REVIEW

1. GOPRO HERO 10 - BEST ACTION CAMERA FOR HUNTING

PRODUCT INFORMATION

  • Capture resolution: 5.3K60

  • Weight: 5.3 ounces
  • Dimensions3.2 x 4.8 x 9.4 inches
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi

GoPro Hero 10, released this September 2021, is the latest addition to the GoPro family. People waited for this camera with so many expectations so let's see if this action cam is suitable for hunters and for those who wish to film animal hunts.

For hunting, a video resolution of 1080p 60p is more than enough. However, you can even shoot at 5.3k at 30 or 60 fps with this action cam making the GoPro take its first goal in the selection of the best action cameras for hunting.

Well, moving on, the problem most people faced with the GoPro 9 was the lack of shooting at 120fps, but with this latest GoPro version, even that is possible.

Now coming to a feature that will be very useful for shooting animal behavior. As you know, tracking the movements of wild animals is not easy because they chase each other at high speeds. But as this GoPro 10 has an IS feature, you're not going to miss even that as it has an in-built HyperSmooth 4.0 image stabilization.  So, be it a lion chasing a deer or yourself focusing on a bird, every footage is going to be very smooth.

You can comfortably use it in rains and still get perfect shots as the lens cover uses a hydrophobic water-shedding glass.

Other useful features for hunting include the ability to use the in-built night lapse mode, 3-array microphone, and water resistance up to 33 feet. With the in-built mic, you can both speak and record videos simultaneously while making a hunting vlog!

Other improved features in this model include these: a smoother live view function and the ability to transfer content via a USB-C cable.

People often find issues with a GoPro's audio quality; however, that's not possible anymore as the GoPro 10 black offers excellent noise reduction technology. Not only that, it is at night times you can capture the best shots of animals and understand their behavior. In that case this GoPro Hero 10 is the best because it can take bright pictures and videos even inside a deep forest. Thanks to the GP2 image processor, which helps you do that.

Overall, in regard to the above-listed features, this GoPro Hero 10 takes 1st place in my list.

FEATURES:

  • GP2 faster image processor
  • 23.6MP image capture resolution
  • Compatible with Max Lens Mod, Media Mod, Display Mod, and Light Mod
  • Offers live streaming
  • Voice control recording
  • Includes built-in GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 3.5mm microphone jack
  • Micro SD card slot available

PROS

  • Super fast

  • Excellent noise control.
  • Hypersmooth 4.0 provides the best image stabilization.

  • The touchscreen facility works even better than GoPro Hero 9.

CONS

  • Nothing much

2. GOPRO MAX

GOPRO MAX - best GoPro for hunting

PRODUCT INFORMATION

  • Capture resolution: 1440p60/1080p60

  • Weight: 5.4 ounces
  • Dimensions2.52 x 0.98 x 2.72 inches

Are you looking for the top GoPro for hunting that is equipped with advanced features? Then I recommend you to take a look at this GoPro model.

The GoPro Max, released in 2019 is a new 360-degree camera with two spherical lenses on either side of the camera that can capture the complete view of the hunting spot accurately.  You have the option to choose between Max SuperView, linear, or wide view for your images. As a result, this camera acts as a perfect hunting companion for capturing every detail of your hunting trip.

NOTE: I suggest using the Super view as it helps make the animal your trying to focus on look closer to you. .

Another feature of this model that I like is its ability to live stream, which is very simple to set up if you have a mobile internet connection. You can Livestream in 1080p and get Max HyperSmooth stabilization. You can also broadcast what you shoot through the GoPro app as well as save the footage to your SD card for later use. In a nutshell, this mode adds a beautiful cinematic feel to your recording.

You might have heard that GoPro's are not that good at capturing audio. But this model has proved it wrong. The directional audio in HERO mode allows you to prioritize sound from both sides of the camera. So if you are vlogging as well as hunting, then this is the camera that you need.

Furthermore, the leveling technology guarantees silky smooth video playback. And when hunting in particularly scenic areas, this camera's panorama mode can produce much more expansive images than a traditional action camera.

Lastly, the GoPro Max's technology positions it as a powerful and impressive option for more daring hunting shots. This GoPro is lightweight, and so you won't face any problem when you use it for hunting. You can even hide it a hunting spot and record the animal behavior clearly.

So overall, I was pretty satisfied with this one, and if I were in your place, I would definitely buy this GoPro Max.

FEATURES:

  • Manual exposure control
  • Excellent 360-degree footage
  • Time-lapse shooting mode
  • Offers live streaming

GoPro Hunting Tips

1. For self filming hunts with GoPro, I would recommend using a 1080p 60fps resolution, either in a medium/wide view. But I prefer a medium view because it will make the subject look closer to you. So, you can focus on the subject accurately.

You could also opt for shooting in 4k; however, I feel 1080p video capture resolution is sufficient for filming hunts. The reason behind going for 60fps is because that’s exactly the speed to capture footage of ducks wobbling in a lake or deer munching on grass. A minimum of 60fps is a must because older GoPros don’t have any stabilization system and if you’re going to lower the frame rate, then be sure you’re going to see much blurry footage in your videos.

Note: In situations where the animal is stationary, a 1080p 30fps is sufficient. But remember, this is only for slow-action shots.
And reducing the video pace is recommended only in post-production!

2. Turn off the beeping sound in GoPro to avoid unnecessary sounds from interrupting the video.

3. Install "GoPro Quik" on your mobile so that you can access the camera wirelessly. This will be beneficial for hunting as you can set the time, turn off the LEDs, and more from your mobile easily.

4.Turn on the "One button" in your GoPro camera so that it will automatically record videos or take the picture as per the pre-set settings you’ve given.

5. Turn on the "Protune setting" to get natural color reproduction in your footage. Having Protune turned on will also shoot amazing hunt videos at better ISOs in low-lights. (Recommended ISO range for shooting hunts is 100-400)

6. If you’re doing archery/bow hunting, it would be best to have 2 GoPros in your hand where one gets mounted on the bow while you can fix the other on your head or a tree, etc. In case you’re using 2 GoPros, don’t forget to check out the GoPro sportsman mount. It can equip two GoPros and can also be useful while shooting in bumpy terrains and forests.

7. I know most GoPros are waterproof; however, I recommend you use a GoPro case for further protection because it’s not normal photography it’s hunting!

gopro Hunting accessories

1. Mounts

a. Headmount

The reason why I prefer using a GoPro for hunting is that it is tiny and can be mounted anywhere, be it a tree or anything. But as this hunting videography, you’ll need the camera with you while moving, and that’s where a head mount comes useful.

Also, GoPros are very bad at recording audio while moving, so I will never suggest you using a GoPro with your hands, especially when you’re on a hunt. Purchase a head mount and place your GoPro on it and go hunting! As simple as that.

Note: Position the camera at 90-degrees; only then you can view the entire scene that’s ahead of you. You could also slightly tilt the camera forward while in this position and adjust the strap sidewards (towards the direction you want to focus). to get an even better field of view.

b. Chest mount

This becomes useful when you’re rowing on a boat or doing fishing on a hot Sunday. It is mainly used to record hand movements while you’re on a hunt. When comparing a head mount and a chest mount, I prefer a head mount because it works better for filming hunts, and it’s mounted on your head, which means you can get a clear view of the subject and it’s not going to move while you walk or lift your hands. Basically, a head mount is fuzz-free.

2. Gun Scope Clamp/gopro shotgun barrel mount

If you’re doing a gunshot rather than bow shooting, using a gun scope clamp will serve you. In this case, you will be mounting the GoPro on the rifle directly so that you can focus the prey accurately. And don’t worry, the GoPro won’t retract while you recoil the gun; it will stay fixed on the gun.

You could also opt for a gopro crossbow mount for this purpose.

3. GoPro harness

If you’re used to taking your watchdog with you while you go for a hunt, then the best way to shoot the video is by mounting the GoPro on the dog’s harness.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR WHILE PURCHASING A GOPRO CAMERA FOR HUNTING

BATTERY LIFE

Hunting sessions are time-consuming, so you must possess a GoPro camera with longer battery life because with a long-lasting battery camera, you can keep both hunting and clicking consistently. Also, you'll be able to easily capture large videos and images.

All GoPro cameras will last for 2-3 hours with only the Continuous video shooting mode turned on. This is one of the features that makes hunters opt for this camera to other action cameras.

Photo and Video Quality

Most GoPros allow 4k resolution; however, a 1080p is good enough for taking brilliant hunting shots and footage. Because shooting at 4k will take much of your storage space.

Storage Capacity

If you want to track your previous hunting footage, you must go for a GoPro with larger storage. GoPro 10 allows you to use memory cards up to 512GB card with it. However, for others, I would prefer GoPro cameras that accept memory cards up to 128GB. GoPro Hero5, Hero5 Session is Hero 4 Black/Silver, and Hero 4 Session are my suggestions.

Water and shock-resistant

As a hunter, you might travel to different locations at different times of the year. Also, several times you are required to shoot in the rain or underwater. As a result, the camera you buy should be waterproof to never get harmed by water. Besides, a camera must even be shock-resistant for photographing and filming in the jungle.

Luckily all the latest GoPro cameras are waterproof up to 33ft and are given an IP66 rating.

Easy mounting

One of the most impressive aspects of GoPro is how they've raised the bar in terms of action camera flexibility as paramount GoPro cameras can be placed on either your shoulder or your head for better shot quality.

It's also a good idea to see if your GoPro is compatible with a tripod, as this will allow you to set up the camera at a distance from where you desire to shoot.

Price

It is critical to choose a camera that is reasonably priced since hunting is a less common sport. So, you should avoid investing excessively in costly cameras that you would not use often. Thus, you must always buy a GoPro at a fair price.

Quiet and easy operation

With a smooth and easy-to-operate camera, you will find paramount comfort in clicking while hunting. A camera with a simple touch display seems to be favorable to a hunter because hunting often necessitates extreme silence.

You can also find that newer GoPro cameras deal with voice control, which is extremely beneficial to you.

Conclusion

So there you have it, a list of the 8 best GoPro hunting cameras that you should consider buying. And, as the GoPro camera is such an essential part of a hunter's kit these days, no one would expect to go hunting without one. As a result, if you want to have a great hunting experience, you must get a camera as soon as possible.

However, the best GoPro will be different for each of us because we all have different needs and uses. As a result, you must initially decide what you desire to do with your hunting camera, such as either you want to use it during the day or at night, and how waterproof you want it to be, as this will make selecting the right model much easier.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

1. What are the different mounts for hunting?

Head Mount: You can place the GoPro on your head using the head mount and capture pictures and videos. To do this, you need to set the camera at the correct angle and adjust the strap sideways towards tilting your head while shooting. By fixing your camera like this, you can capture whatever you want, and your gun won't hinder your view.

Chest Mount: You can place your GoPro on your chest using this mount. But I think this isn't a good option because you won't be able to capture much while you are shooting or lifting up your gun or bow.

Sportsman mount: This is a strong mount that can handle rough fields and keeps your GoPro safe in any environmental conditions.

Dog Harness: Yes, there exist camera mounts that can be fixed on your pet dog and shoot stuff or just get an idea of what lies ahead.

2. Can you record audio using your GoPro while hunting?

I must admit that when it comes to recording audio while in movement, GoPro isn't the best. But still, you can get the best out of it if you mount your GoPro and don't hold it in your hands while hunting. Mounting your GoPro can help minimize the effects of noise.
