As important as conserving stock is allocating it fairly and transparently is even more important. Inequitable or whimsical allocation destroys trust and breeches the unwritten social contract (http://tinyurl.com/774s84z). Plus, taking a methodical approach goes a long way to providing a solid infrastructure for an attractive company culture.

Startups are high risk, high reward undertakings. That's why we do them. There are ways to manage the risk, but you can't make it go away. Mathematically speaking, the vast majority of startups will fail, which means the vast majority of people who start them will be associated with unsuccessful startups. That's the definition of high risk.

The problem is that we associate the failure of a startup with failure as individuals. We have that backwards. While it's true that some will find that they're not cut out for the entrepreneurial life and return to "regular" jobs, others will learn from their failures, recover from the setback, and try again. These are the startup heroes, and we should be celebrating them. Investors should be looking at how an entrepreneur's previous venture(s) "failed" and what lessons they have learned in the process. It's pretty easy to find the ones who learned good lessons and have matured into more capable managers and entrepreneurs. These are the people who can significantly reduce the risk factor in their next startup, and we should be treating them like gold.

Roadkill is just part of the process.

We agree. Lunch is important, and not just to network with people you work with but to expand your circle of professional contacts. Meeting others during lunch or other workday breaks exposes you to new information, ideas, and opportunities. Schedule or join lunches with other professionals for free at Down4Lunch.com.
