This won&#039;t be surprising to many, but the US Government (via the NSA) has been mining and analyzing (what is not referred to as) SM content for more than 10 years.  Even the Government isn&#039;t big enough to read the internet. 
 
7 years ago when we started up MotiveQuest we licensed this pattern recognition and visualization software from the NSA - which anybody can do.  (Example below)

		<description>Amazing how freely people are willing to share private and/or personal information in public. I guess to some it&#039;s very innocent and cutesy, very in the moment. But to your point, it will ultimately come back to haunt people who never imagined it could..  
 
It comes down to discretion and consideration of possible long-term consequences of what you disclose online. Something that seems to be lacking in this day and age of &quot;reality&quot; everything.

The companies who figure out how to help people manage their public profile will be top performers.  
I like the Tweet deck (learnt from you!) that helps me understand how to use Twitter. 
I just discovered BusinessWeek&#039;s reader forum which is BRILLIANT. 
I get a profile and when I tweet or post an article wih a comment, it gets aded to my profile on their reader forum. It also lists my blog. All of a sudden, I have been enabled to add content to BusinessWeek posting a comment but it also gives me a forum to show my website, blog, Twitter and Linkedin profile. Within minutes, I have a very rich profile under a quality banner. This is what all newspapers should be doing.
