It definitely makes sense what Mark is saying about social media as a channel, i.e. in terms of spreading awareness and calculating the value delivered to the customers and value gained by the firm through online product/brand/service exposure directing them to purchase. 
Calculating ROI delivered from the projected 10% investment in marketing-sales through social media tools and technologies will be the prime focus in 2010 and though it will be difficult to capture the real metrics but some analytics company will definitely coem up with a complete end-to-end solution to measure the same.
