A year ago, I lost my job as director of community for PlanetEye. While certainly disappointing, it was a move that made financial sense for PlanetEye in the wake of the economic downturn and the credit crisis – something that many startups were forced to address.
It also marked the start of a new and exciting entrepreneurial adventure with the decision to do my own startup, ME Consulting. It has been a busy, exhilarating and rewarding year with great clients, the opportunity to meet interesting people, and a hands-on education in running a business.
As well, it has probably been the job in which I’ve worked the hardest and the most hours, which is easy when it’s your business. I’ve learned how to hustle and realized that “healthy paranoia” about getting business in the door is a good thing because it keeps you motivated and energized.
Perhaps the biggest challenge in starting my own business has been defining what I do and the value I provide clients. In many ways, I can do a lot of things. I can write content for Web sites, brochures, fact sheets, videos and strategic marketing plans. These services have struck a chord with startups looking for one-stop shopping and bang for the buck.
I also provide social media strategy and tactics. I can create plans to embrace social media services, and give the insight and hands-on training to use them effectively and productively.
One of the challenges in offering a variety of services is clearly articulating what you do. It’s easier if you do one thing really well. So, if I had to identify an area for improvement, it would be doing a better job of spelling out what ME Consulting does and the value my services provide.
That said, it’s been a terrific year with great clients such as Sysomos, Primal Fusion, Thoora, Rogers Ventures, WineAlign and the Academica Group. Thanks to everyone for all their help along the way, including my family, which has been extremely supportive.
I’m looking forward to an exciting 2010!
Congrats Mark! Here's to another great year!
I like your comment about "hardest and most hours".
Good luck in year two!
