The Google Empire Strikes Again

Godzilla
You have to feel sorry all those hard-working entrepreneurs that toil away creating a unique service only to have Google eventually roll into the market – sort of like Godzilla attacking Tokyo.

Case in point is Google/GMail’s move into the to-do list market where upstarts/startups such as Remember the Milk and Ta-Da List have been slowly but surely building a following of people who want a way to track all the thing they need to do online.

When these hard-working entrepreneurs get wind of Google’s invasion, do they start cursing and throwing things around the office? Do they say things like, “It’s bad enough Google dominates search; why do they have to move into this market?”

From Google’s perspective, the advance into new services is just a fact of life given you’ve got thousands of well-paid engineers within the Googleplex who need projects to keep them engaged.

In many respects, Google is like the Roman Empire that continues to expand its territory into every market and niche. You have to wonder if there’s an online market that Google won’t invade.

Unrelated, but I’m LOVING the new design.

True, Google does continue to expand their coverage, but they are being keen to retreat from areas that they haven’t done well in.

Take Lively for example. Launched to much fanfare back in the summer, it’s already been canned. There are other examples as well, and Google is likely to strategically tighten the belt as this economy deteriorates.

So, unlike the Roman Empire, they know how to fallback and “cut their losses” before it costs them everything.

even i have my concerns for the same. It is good for google & bad for all small companies, when they will find one fine morning they have been invaded and every thing is lost. a serious new innovations are required to get marketshare back from this growing godzilla

I’m still waiting for them to come out with their own Googleized media player.
