For the past few months, Twitter has been beefing up its infrastructure – making sure its servers don’t crash when things get hot and heavy for the Twitterati.
Twitter made it through a major hurdle a few months ago when it survived Steve Jobs’ keynote but the real test will come tomorrow during the U.S. election when, from all accounts, Twitter is going to get pounded as people live blog (live Tweet?) every nuance of the evening’s proceedings.
If the Twitter Whale rises to the surface on a regular basis, it will be a huge embarrassment to Twitter and its investors. If Twitter thrives, it’s a strong indication Twitter’s platform is ready for anything…even a business model.

I agree about the importance of this event, but if I was an investor, or their CFO for that matter, I’d want some limits on how much I’d spend to support anomalous peak traffic patterns in the absence of a business model. At some point, it’s got to be best efforts basis when it’s free.
For a free service, I agree. If/when Twitter introduces a premium service, maybe it would include a five-nines clause!
