I agree with jon.

This whole thing is absolutely stupid.

If I want to buy gas I'll buy gas.

If I want to buy a TV I'll buy a TV.

Why would somebody rather have a card worth 100$ of gas instead of just having 100$ that that can do that AND MORE?

This would make absolute sense from a pure market play. $100 in gas feels more meaningful than $100 rebate.

However, I worry that there is a disconnect between certain items and the gas station. My cell phone shouldn't come with a gas card, it should just be cheaper ($100 off). My GPS unit probably should come with a gas card.

The other consideration we need to make, it is consumer will pony up for heftier prices in exchange for gas cards. I would rather purchase a $100 phone (really $180 with an $80 rebate) than a $180 phone with an $80 gas card.
