What an exciting way to start another wonderful Web 2.0 week – I signed up for Plurk after reading on Duncan Riley’s blog that it is “spreading like wildfire through the first adopter community today”.
A few reasons for taking the Plurk Plunge:
1. It sounds intriguing enough to register and check out. Plurk is a lot like Twitter but it has a different user interface and a variety of statement options (e.g thinks, feels, was, asks, likes, loves, wants) as opposed to a blank box where you have to insert the verb.
2. If Plurk does manage to grab a foothold amid the Twitter-obsessed world in which we live, I wanted to make sure I secured “markevans” as my Plurk ID. It would be disappointing to be known as “maplemark” because another Mark Evans was quicker off the mark.
(Note: Here’s an opportunity for enterprising entrepreneur: create a beta registration service where someone can automatically be signed up for anything new and interesting, and have their preferred username. It sounds like something people may actually pay to use.)
Paris Lemon has also taken the Plurk Plunge, and describes it was “pretty”. Here’s his take:
“I also really like how it handles embedded pictures and videos. I think future versions of Twitter, which I hope one day will include the option to embed pictures and videos, could learn a lot from this. Will Plurk catch on? Probably not, but who knows – maybe if Twitter stays down long enough. But just being pretty isn’t enough, just check out MoodMill as an example of that.”
Oh, Oh: Plurk (the creation of Alvin Woon) has one thing in common with Twitter already: It’s down.

Update: I’m three hours into Plurk, and already have three Plurk friends. Not sure whether this is a good or bad thing. If you want to be my Plurk friend, here’s my profile. Mashable’s Stan Schroeder asks the $64,000 question about Plurk: Is it worth switching from Twitter?
