It seems almost ironic but even the least environmentally-sound province, Alberta has a recycling fee program on electronics. The tax is tacked on the new purchases of TVs, computers and possibly other electronic devices.

You're right, it is a tax but who says all taxes are necessarily bad. I guess it's an indication the provincial government has become tired of waiting for consumer electronic manufacturers to go green.

Another thought-provoking post, Mark.

It is a tax (and the thin edge of a very large wedge, unfortunately) but at least it would create some awareness at the point of purchase of the real costs (the lifetime costs) of owning stuff, stuff and more stuff.

I am as much of a gadget fiend as the next person, but it is troubling how disposable all this stuff has become.
