Canada’s Copyright Crisis

Canada will soon unveil new copyright direction that could have a devastating impact on the ownership and use of content in this country.

Michael Geist has been leading the charge with a series of posts, the creation of a Facebook group (more than 10,000 members and growing) and a YouTube video that shows 30 ways that you can do fight the new legislation that will mirror the troubled Digital Millennium Copyright Act in the U.S.

Here’s Geist sad commentary on what’s on the copyright horizon:”

“Next week will not be as good. On Tuesday, Prentice will rise in the House of Commons and introduce Bill C-36 or C-37 which will quickly become better known as the CDMCA. If the initial comments are any indication, he will invoke a series of discouragingly weak justifications for a law that will cause significant harm to education, consumer interests, personal property rights, and free speech. ”

Here’s Geist’s 30 ways to battle the Canadian DMCA.

The only thing sad about Geist’s commentary is that people continue to listen to his half-baked rantings. Ask him point-blank how this will effect consumers and you’ll get vague comments not specifics. I think the people on his Facebook group are like lemmings.
