Vista has it's problems and probably more than any other Microsoft O/S since 3.1. The real problem isn't Vista or a population browsing with Apples or Macs, it is game consoles, game consoles are eating up the time and money game software writers used to lavish on the PC. Why buy a $2000 gaming rig when the best games show up on the Xbox or Playstation and may never or at the very least take months if not years to show up for a PC? Look at "Gears of War". Vista in the long run will prevail because a lot of the problems with Vista is poor code writing, which is why Vista is here, to hold feet to the fire at those software publishers caves who let sloppy code writing run rampant. So buy a $300 PC with Vista take care of all business or work or school and buy a game console for $500 and spend less than a Mac ever thought about pricing itself.

The perceived issues with Vista do benefit one company. Apple stores are full and people are walking out with iMacs and MacBooks. Perhaps the switch is on?

Mark, it's probably worth checking out two posts by Alec Saunders recently on the Vista issue. In the first, (http://saunderslog.com/2007/08/29/writing-to-microsoft/) Alec writes a letter to two of his former Microsoft colleagues with his issues. He immediately received a response (http://saunderslog.com/2007/08/30/3489/) to the effect that not only is there an SP1 coming along but also the person in charge of the SP1 release was in charge of the very well received Office 2007.

And, in a third post appropriately entitled, Egg Anyone?, (http://saunderslog.com/2007/09/09/3502/) he reveals that much of his problems turned out to be bad memory modules hardware (in two different PC's) Replace the relevant memory and Vista became much more stable for him. He talks about how he considered Mac but then bought a Vista-based PC as a third unit for his work.
