The iSolation of the iPod

After a much-needed vacation, I’ve been riding my bike downtown to work - PlanetEye - again. One thing that has really struck me is how unengaged many people are when walking around, riding their bikes, sitting on a patio, etc.

The culprit? The iPod. Whether they’re lost in the music or lost in their own thoughts, the iPod has sucked people out of the here and now. Not that listening to your iPod is a bad thing but people seem to be paying less attention to their world around them.

In particular, I find it incredible anyone riding a bike on a busy street, for example, would be listening to music as opposed being aware of their immediate surroundings. It’s right up there with not wearing a helmet.

What about the bike ride without a helmet on! It never ceases to amaze me when I ride by and give a courteous “on your left” call, and not even a flinch happens.

One mustn’t assume that everyone who listens to and IPod while cycling to work has the volume set so high as to block the world around them completely out. Use the volume control people! I do. Even if it doesn’t save your life, which the helmet may, it will certainly help save your hearing.
