I had an e-mail yesterday from someone looking for a list of user-generated content companies in Canada. Well, there’s b5media (that’s an easy one, eh!), Bubbleshare (photo-sharing), Blogware (blog publishing) Cambrian House (crowd-sourcing), Five Limes (green retailing), BlogTV.ca (video-sharing) iBegin (local listings), Kitchen Lackey (recipes, cooking) and….who else it out there? Do we have another potential Flickr in our midst? Why isn’t this list longer given we’re in the midst of a user-generated content revolution. After all, Time Magazine recently declared 2006 to be the year of “You” so shouldn’t “You” also include Canadians? If you’ve got more suggestions, let me know and I’ll add them to the list.
Update: A few more members to add: Nakama (wireless photo sharing), NowPublic (citizen journalism), ProductWiki (product reviews/e-commerce), Netus (business project network), Food Inc. (restaurant reviews), FrontRowCentre (movie reviews and listings), JobLoft (job classifieds) and Top10PressReleases.com (Digg-like voting on stock market press releases).
Don’t forget about ProductWiki, we’re based out of Waterloo
There is also Longtail Publishing. Our site http://www.foodinc.ca has been around since 2002 and our other site http://www.frontrowcentre.com has been around since 1999. Both of these sites have user generated content. We are expanding our network of sites and building tighter integration among them.
Productwiki is Canadian? Bravo.
How about nakama.ca or jobloft.com.
Mark, http://www.TOP10PressReleases.com is a site where investors submit and vote on the best stock market press releases of the day. Currently in beta with full roll-out coming in 2-3 months.
In addition, http://www.agoracom.com is an online community of small-cap investors that post information and discuss specific small-cap stocks in monitored forums. The users actually tell us which posts to delete.
Best,
George
Mark, for the sake of full disclosure, I should let everyone know that both sites belong to us.
Best,
George
There will be a mobile “youtube” launching within a month or so and it’s 100% Canadian, read about it at http://www.movy.tv , you will be able to upload and download video and audio from your mobile device to web with Movy, including Blackberry’s as I know we get left out in the cold for the fun stuff.
Hey Mark, I’m actually working on a user-generated content site and I’m based in Canada.
The site (currently nameless) will focus on reviews by and for tourists, covering things such as hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs, museums, and other attractions. Mapping is going to be a key feature of the site. We hope to have a private beta running by the end of March, with a public beta a couple months thereafter.
http://www.ipartee.com coming soon.
Hi.
Don’t forget about Great White North Version of Digg. There’s a recently launched called Web site called News 2.0 (www.news2.ca) that looks like it’s trying to create a Canadian version of Digg or Newsvine.

Sneakerplay…is our invite-only social network/labour of love dedicated to street/sneaker culture. We’re proud to call Toronto HOME!
This have been a great response to the question. I think gaining a better understanding of who is out there in Canada will really help us move the market forward. I suggest that anyone who see’s this blog suggests that their friends read it as well so we can try and build this list even further out. I hope everyone has taken a look at netus.com . Hope to see more comments in the near future. All the best

Hey Mark,
User generated content in Canada? Don’t forget NowPublic out of Vancouver. http://www.nowpublic.com
In the last year they have become one of the fastest growing news organizations with over 31,000 reporters in 130 countries.
Best regards
Mark
Yup, got it on the list…:)
