A sign that blogging has become serious business are plans for a new conference in Las Vegas next November called BlogWorld. A press release proclaims "the event will combine elements of the corporate communications world with the needs of active, individual “bloggers†will be the first gathering of its kind." It would be easy to argue that blog/blogging gatherings/conferences have been happening on a fairly regular basis for a couple years but the fact an event is taking place at the Las Vegas Convention Centre suggests the conference business has realized the blogging business is ripe with potential (a.k.a. profits). Thanks for the post Mark. No doubt there have been several conferences of different sorts Blog Business Summit, BlogHer, BlogCon, BlogOn!, Blog Camp, etc, the Yearly Kos
First of all this is much more than a conference, BlogWorld & New Media Expo is a tradeshow, conference, and media event that was conceived of and built to represent the entire new media industry, not one particular segment.
Don't think of BlogCon, or BlogHer (great events in their own right) think National Association of Broadcasters 40,000 people, or Consumer Electronics Show over 100,000 people. Both of these events represent all of the broad and disparate niches within their larger industries.
The idea is to do the same thing with BlogWorld. Bringing far more serious bloggers, from a much broader segment than anything ever held for this industry to date. Political bloggers, might not have much in common with tech bloggers, but all bloggers do have several things we all need like publishing software, broad band, web hosting, wifi, podcasting software, widgets, badges & plug-ins, etc.
And lots of us have common interests like which affiliate programs to use, or what ad network will work best, or how to build readership/viewership/listenership, etc.
The Podcast & Portable Media expo held earlier this year in Ontario California is a great example and brought 2,500 pro and hi end hobbyist podcasters to their event. At the awards ceremony one of the winners was a podcast on Harry Potter, another from a Catholic Priest, and still another on sex. People who had very little in common other than their use of podcasting as an effective medium.
Obviously when you combine bloggers, podcasters, internet radio broadcasters, and all the other forms of new media together you are talking easily 4,000 attendees for the inaugural event.
If blogging event like that already exists, I haven't heard of it.
We fully plan and intend on the event being much much bigger than that in the years to come.
Of course we want b5 there in a big way 8).
