It's Good to be Mobile

November 2nd, 2006 Posted in Main Page, Venture Capital, Wireless

Just like the VCs adored e-commerce start-ups during the dot-com boom, they've got a big, bad thing for mobile start-ups these days. Case in point is MobiTV, which just raised another $30-million from a group of investors that includes Hearst Corp. and Adobe Systems. So far, MobiTV has raised $125-million, and it's far from a slam dunk whether there's a huge demand among mobile device users to watch video on little screens. That said, the VCs seems to more than happy to finance mobile services and technology. It will be interesting to see how well Toronto-based Ambient Vector does in its pursuit of private equity. If anything, the company seems to be in the right place at the right time.

I'd like to see real mobile computing work before mobile entertainment via computers. But I guess there aren't a million or so teenagers that want to spend $30 a month to do something just because it's “cool”
I'd like to see cellphones that work anywhere before I want a phone that projects 3-D holograms - because if I don't have coverage I won't see that hologram or whatever anyway. Yes, I'm being facetious.
Perhaps this isn't an issue in the States or areas with a more dense population than Central Alberta - however I should be able to go from top to bottom of the main highway here and have coverage.
By the way, when I say “more dense population” I mean tightly packed together. ;-)
