Toronto Hydro Moves into Wi-Fi

Although all the details won't come out until a press conference tomorrow, Toronto Hydro apparently plans to launch a Wi-fi network later this year - putting the city-owned utility in competition with private sector players such as Bell, Telus, Rogers and TeraGo. Toronto Hydro Telecom already operates a no-frills enterprise connectivity business to leverage the fiber optic technology it has installed in recent years. This Wi-fi network, however, appears to be focused on consumers and modelled along the lines of networks being operated in Philadelphia and New Orleans.

Interesting stuff.
I work for Hydro One, and I knew for sure smart metering would be involved somehow.
Security and accounts will be enormous for them, like the article mentions.
I think telus and rogers are just mad because of the new competition

This is great news for Toronto and for all other major cities in Canada waiting for municipal wi-fi. You do have to wonder how much interference will be run by companies like Rogers, Bell, and Telus to try and stop something that could jepordize more than 1 of their revenue streams. Let's push for Vancouver next!

Municipal wifi is already available for free in most of Fredericton NB. It's very convenient and relatively quick. I think it's great!!! Hope it comes to Ottawa
