With respect, Mark, it's not like having to have a real "business model" is a new requirement (MAN, I hate that "business model" phrase -- it's so Harvard MBA/ex-McKinsey wonk-ish. It's a nice way to not have to say "if you squint hard enough maybe you can see how we might make money with this puppy." It's right up there with "end-to-end-solution." ARGH! It's just a BUSINESS dammit). Something that's profitable, sustainable and matters to customers -- that's what you need to be doing, regardless of whether you are firing up the Next Big Web Thing or selling street meat at King and Peter.

People are having trouble defining Web 2.0 let alone coming up with business models.
I would like to propose a new definition of web 2.0. The first version of the internet only had sites and pages that relied on leading you directly to a sale of a product or displayed massive amounts of advertising. This was the only way to pay for hosting bandwidth and a ton of employees.
Today you have companies like mine, consisting of a sole employee (ME). In 2 short years i've gone from nobody to the largest canadian owned site and top 100 in the United States. I've put smaller sites out of business, leapfrogged ahead of lavalife which has had a monoply for 10 years and halted their growth. When facebook was funded and mypace bought I had a flood of VC's knocking at my door, the latest valuation they put on my site was north of 100 million, not bad for a one person part time company...
At any rate adsense is the foundation of a new internet, and it will allow far better monitization/PROFIT then many paid services could offer.
