TorrentSpy Complies with Copyright Law

June 18th, 2005 Posted in Main Page

For anyone using TorrentSpy to download the new Colplay Album “X&Y”, you'll be greeted with this message: “This search query has been blocked at the request of the copyright holder, in compliance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act“. For those unaware of the DMCA, it's a controverial U.S. law that criminalizes technology used to violate copyright. What's interesting about the DMCA's application on the top-selling Coldplay CD is it seems to be an isolated incident. Queries on U2, the Rolling Stones and Madonna using TorrentSpy all produced multiple search results. You wonder if EMI Group's decision to invoke DMCA has to do with the fact “X&Y” tops the charts. Perhaps this move is a sign of things to come as music label's move pro-activity to protect the small group of commercially-successful artists that generate most of their sales and profits.
