Is Bell Mobilty Trying to out-Virgin Virgin?

March 13th, 2005 Posted in Main Page

Driving home last night, I noticed a billboard with the words “Hidden Costs Suck”. For an instant, I thought it was from Virgin Mobile Canada but it was - surprise - Bell Mobility.
So what gives? For years, Bell was your father's wireless service - reliable, boring, the market leader. With the joint venture with Virgin, the idea was Bell would be half of a new, hip service to go after younger consumers. It seems bizarre that just prior to Virgin's launch earlier this month, Bell started to change its stripes. It's now trying to be cool and edgy. It's like waking up one morning to discover your father has a skateboard, he's listening to hip hop and calling everyone “dude”. I don't get it.

Dude, you don't have a skateboard? By the way, I do listen to Eminem, but it's cool to listen to Led Zeppelin again.
And my sons are 19 and 17.

True, but I think their point is that Bell is no longer misrepresenting the fee, so that in the advertised prices customers know what they're getting.
