Cisco's Other Businesses
By Mark Evans | February 9, 2005
A few years ago, Cisco talked about building several new US$1-billion + businesses to complement/supplement its core routing and switch units. At the time, it seemed more like marketing talk - a good story to tell to deflect attention away from the fact that one day the core business would start to slow. Turns out Cisco knew what they were talking about - something that shouldn't surprise many people, I guess.
In posting its fiscal second-quarter results yesterday, Cisco's advanced technology unit had sales of more than US$1.1-billion. Of these ventures, IP telephony, security and home-networking are poised to become US$1-billion this year. Cisco “cheated” a little when it bought Linksys for US$500 million in 2003, but the fact remains there are new high-growth businesses within the company.
