Primus Moves Forward on VOIP

While Canada's carriers and cablecos sit on the VOIP sidelines, Primus Canada continues to push ahead by expanding its service to eight more cities in Ontario and adding 911 service. It is noteworthy Primus also dropped its prices for residential and business customers, which either suggests the service's adoption has been slow or that Primus wants to carve out more market share before rivals such as Vonage, Rogers, Shaw and Bell get into the game.

It is interesting to point out that while Vonage is not yet “formally” available in Canada, I have some friends in Ottawa that have been using the service for quite sometime (with a US number/address from a relative).
Another interesting factor to consider is the competition that all these services will have with players that have already been in the marketplace for quite sometime and offer really dirt-cheap LD via toll bypass (i.e. by using IP networks at the core). Even if the edge is not IP, users can always dial a local access number with a password and then enter a code before getting LD access.
But Primus did beat out the competition in bragging rights to be the first one to enter the market.
